WHAT IS A BLUE RAINBOW TROUT? A Blue Rainbow Trout is a variant of a Rainbow, Oncorhynchus mykiss. These trout display a iridescent body color of cobalt blue on their backs with a silvery color on the undersides. The color is the result from a Tyndall effect that involves the structural arrangements of melanin pigments which disappeared when binding with the depigmenting gene. Blue fry are typically 25% smaller but can be reproduced without issue.
Most hatcheries hold on to their Blue Rainbows and place them in special viewing areas for visitors to enjoy. But, a few are stocked here and there. So, if you catch one, consider yourself fortunate.
